CONSTRUCTION DEFECT LITIGATION
Since the onset of of the pandemic, construction has been at an all time high and, unfortunately, consrtruction fraud has increased as well. People frustrated that so many contractors are unavailable, are the ones most vulnerable to hiring the wrong firm or individuals. The Contractor's State License Board has set strict standards that most competent builders have no problem following, but there are many unscrupulous individuals who will take advantage of the busy season. Some things to do and watch for:
-
Beware of any contractor who has an open schedule. A busy contractor is more than likely a good one. Be wise and patient meaning you are better off to wait a few months before you start spending money on your construction project to make sure you get a skilled, licensed contractor.
-
Check out the license of any potential contactor with the CSB (Contractor's State LIcense Board) to ensure that he/she/they are licensed for the work they are going to perform for you and that their license is current.
-
Check reviews, if available, and ask for recommendations from any potential contractor's prior jobs. These people are the best people to tell you how the job went, if it was completed within a reasonable time and if they were satisfied with the work and the cost.
-
Get more than one bid for your project and compare the work that is going to be performed.
-
Educate yourself on the steps required, the length of time for the project and if permits are required. Beware of any contractor who tells you to forgo getting a permit or who leaves it "up to you." A good contractor has no problem following the law. Remember, the permit is your best protection from not only unscrupulous contractors, but also to ensure that the job is done properly.
